The Division of Nursing at CVMC's hospital consists of the following departments:

Shared Governance Model

CVMC uses the Shared Governance model to make decisions about nursing practice, use of technology, quality of care, and operations. The model is a collaborative process involving all departments of the medical center with a focus on nursing as the core of the care delivery process. The goal is to ensure the voice of nursing in their own practice and the decisions made that affect nursing process is heard through the unit-based and hospital-wide councils.

Unit-Based Councils

Each unit has at least one council that focuses on specific quality, patient care practice and professional development. A staff member serves as the chair and the unit determines individual members. The unit leadership participates in an advisory capacity and does not have voting power on issues before the unit councils.

Hospital-Wide Councils

There are five hospital-wide councils that focus on nursing practice, use of technology, quality, professional development, and management/operations.  A sixth, Coordinating Council, is a collaborative between the five council chairs, the CNO, a Director/Manager, an Administrative Nurse Coordinator, and a staff nurse elected from the general nursing staff.  The Coordinating Council resolves differences between councils, coordinates the work of the councils, and arbitrates any decisions that cannot be completed at a council level.   

Safe Patient Handling

CVMC cares about the well-being of our nurses and patients. We've made a significant investment in safe patient handling and mobility equipment in order to reduce staff injuries and improve how we care for our patients. This includes equipment that helps patients walk and weight bear, move in bed as well as lift and transfer. All patients’ mobility status is assessed on a regular basis at the medical center and at Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing to ensure appropriate equipment is utilized.
